SHILLONG: To raise awareness about the presence of cradle points in city hospitals and to educate the public about the laws and schemes in regard to abandonment of unwan-ted babies, the students from the Department of Social Work, Martin Luther Christian University on Friday performed a street play in Iewduh, Shillong.
The programme which was a part of students’ experiential learning concerning communication had been initiated by the department of English and Communication in collaboration with the National Service Scheme, MLCU.
The students of MSW 3rd semester performed a two-part street play with emphasis on the laws and punishment regarding abandoning babies and also the different laws that allow a parent or guardian to give up the custody of the child to the government in case either of them is not able to provide proper care for the baby.
The second part of the play included the use of cradle points which are available in the different hospitals in the city.
The play explained the significance of cradle points as places where one can leave the unwanted child so that the baby can get a chance to get a proper life rather than being left uncared for in an unhealthy or dangerous environment.
