SHILLONG: Congress MDC P.T. Sawkmie has hit out at the BJP candidate from Sohiong who had recently said that, ‘Meghalaya is not a Christian state’.
“Meghalaya is a Christian state. The entire country is aware of this,” Sawkmie asserted.
He said that it was also wrong on the part of State BJP president Shibun Lyngdoh to say that Meghalaya cannot be referred to as a Christian state despite being dominated by Christians. Sawkmie added that India is known as a secular country worldwide and “it should uphold its secular identity.”
It may be mentioned that in a damage control tactic following the statement made by the BJP’s district council by-poll candidate for the Sohiong seat that “Meghalaya is not a Christian state”, Shibun Lyngdoh had said that the party wishes to separate religion from politics.
