SHILLONG: The High Court of Meghalaya has asked the government to rectify the difficulties, if any, faced by the public due to the temporary closure of 14th mile at Byrnihat portion of the National Highway.
The petitioner, Tamulikuchi High School submitted that due to the placing of barricade at 14th mile, Byrnihat, the public have to take a different route of about 16 kms to enter and go out of Shillong.
On the other hand, senior state counsel N.D. Chullai assisted by K.P. Bhattacharjee who appeared on behalf of the State submitted that it was a purely temporary measure taken by the government to ensure that there is no loss of revenue owing to truckers evading tax payment.
The arrangement does not affect vehicular movement, he added.
The court, however, said that in the meantime, the government may examine whether there are any difficulties faced by the public and if so, how to rectify the same.
The matter will be listed after winter vacation.
