SHILLONG: The Meghalaya Indigenous Youth Front (MIYF) has said the authorities’ failure to address the problems faced by the public in and around Iewduh (Bara Bazar) is a cause for worry.
In a statement to the press, MIYF said, “The recent visit of the Chief Minister (Mukul Sangma), the Urban Minister and the Governor (to Iewduh) was futile as there is no hope for improvement of the worse situation of the market.”
The organisation alleged that the Hima Mylliem and the KHADC are generating fund but not utilising it in developing drainage facilities at the traditional market. Bara Bazar lacks proper drainage system and filth and water often overflows to the footpaths and roads making it unfit for pedestrians and shop owners.
On the other hand, referring to the traffic congestion, MIYF said, “The MUDA and the Hima Mylliem increased the problems by converting road sides in some pockets into illegal parking lots surrounding Iewduh to make easy money. This has become a burden for the common people.”
“The PWD (Roads) allowed the MUDA and the Hima Mylliem to convert the roadside into illegal mini parking zones at their free will,” it said.
