TURA: The family of a farmer in South West Garo Hills who committed suicide last week has blamed demonetisation for the death.
Wajning G Momin (50) of Sindilgre village was building a house and had taken a loan of Rs 10,000 from a neighbour to pay the workers.
Momin had to take the loan as he could not withdraw money from his account, which he opened after the demonetisation announcement, said his relatives. He then tried to withdraw Rs 20,000 from his account in a bank in Ampati but could get only Rs 6,000.
Distraught at not being able to keep his word to return the loan amount within three days, he allegedly hanged himself the same evening.
The family has threatened to move court to seek compensation from the State for the tragedy.
