Panel on border security visits Baghmara, Gumaghat

SHILLONG: Members of the high-powered Madhukar Gupta Committee of the National Security Council visited the BSF outposts at Baghmara and Gumaghat on Thursday to have a feel of the first line of defence.
In a statement, the BSF said the committee on strengthening the Indo-Bangladesh border, headed by former home secretary Gupta, met P.K Dubey, IG BSF (Meghalaya frontier), who briefed about the prevailing security scenario at the border as well as in the State and presented the essence of security grid between various agencies involved in the national security.
The committee, which arrived in Shillong on Wednesday, was apprised of the co-ordination between the agencies managing the Indo-Bangladesh border, border haats, integrated check posts, land custom stations and various other issues pertaining to infrastructure development for effective border guarding.
Dubey also projected a detailed requirement for plugging existing gaps due to rivers, nullahs and topographical hazards, among other things, with the help of technological solutions.
During their visit to the borders, a briefing about the border domination and the security situation was given by commandants of both the BSF battalions.
Gupta and other committee members interacted with the BSF jawans and encouraged them with motivational speech.
The committee members also visited the Indo-Bangladesh border fence at Baghmara and examined the gaps owing to the Simsang and the Jadukata rivers.
The committee also interacted with the representatives of civil administration, police, customs and other agencies at Baghmara and Gumaghat.
