TURA: The Meghalaya BJP unit’s claims that it faced defeat in the recent by-elections to the KHADC and JHADC due to a delay in announcement of the change in dates for Good Governance Day has been ridiculed by the regional United Democratic Party (UDP).
“The BJP claims a delay in announcing the change in date from December 25 to 23 for Good Governance Day led to their defeat. Their statement is totally misleading,” informed the youth wing of UDP in Garo Hills.
Targeting the ruling party at the centre, UDP youth wing leaders questioned the alleged ‘partisan’ policy of the national party.  “Was the statement by Meghalaya BJP President Shibun Lyngdoh of his own or a decision taken by the prime minister of India? If it was from the centre then why was the announcement meant only for Meghalaya? What about the other states where Christians reside?” questioned Anand Marak, joint secretary of state youth wing of the UDP.
Appealing to the party against touching on the sentiments of Christians, the regional party instead gave an advice to the BJP leaders of the state to stand and protect the rights of the people.
The UDP also took a swipe at the three elected members of parliament, Congress Lok Sabha MP from Shillong Vincent Pala, Tura Lok Sabha MP Conrad K Sangma of the NPP and Rajya Sabha MP Wansuk Syiem of the Congress, for their alleged indifference to the ongoing controversy over Good Governance Day.
“Why are our Christian MPs maintaining silence over this issue?” questioned the UDP.
