KSU pays homage in city
JOWAI: The Jaintia Iasiat Khnam Kiang Nangbah Memorial Society (JIKKNMS) organised a programme on Friday to commemorate the 154th death anniversary of U Kiang Nangbah, the freedom fighter of the Pnars, at Syntu Ksiar, the place where his monument stands.
Deputy Chief Minister R.C Laloo, who was the chief guest, and JHADC Deputy Chief Awhoi Andrew Shullai paid floral tribute to the martyr. Leaders of several pressure groups and hundreds of locals assembled at Syntu Ksiar to remember the bravery of Kiang Nangbah who challenged the power of the British raj in the 1860s.
Addressing the gathering at the programme, Laloo urged the people, particularly the youth of the State, to follow in the footsteps of Kiang Nangbah for the betterment of the society and the country.
The JHADC Deputy Chief said the Council would extend financial support to the organisation for developing the Madan Madiah Kmai Blai — the field where Kiang Nangbah was elected leader to fights against the British Rule.
Jait Da-o Sumer, the memorial Society President, said the organisation is planning to set up a museum and auditorium and beautify the traditional archery field.
Acting Dolloi Puramon Kynjin also spoke about the greatness of the leader, who consolidated and led the Jaintias against the foreign rulers.
The speeches were followed by a cultural programme and prize distribution.
Meanwhile, KSU leaders paid homage to Jaintia freedom fighter U Kiang Nangbah on the patriot’s 154th death anniversary on Friday.
KSU president Daniel Khyriem said the heroic deeds of the martyr, who was a commoner fighting against the British raj, will serve as an inspiration for generations to come.
“Leaders of different units have the responsibility in bringing a change, even as we turn to the KSU girls’ wing to raise voices against the rising crime against women and children,” he said.
Referring to the influx situation in the State, Khyriem said, “Danger awaits the people of the State with the enrolment of illegal immigrants to avail benefits from the State Government.”
Khyriem urged the leaders to take inspiration from the freedom fighter and play key roles in leading people.
