SHILLONG: The city has lost its chill in winter this year compared to the past years. As per the official weather data, December 20 was the only coolest day of the year till date with maximum temperature recorded at 16.1°C and minimum at 6.4°C.
An official dealing with weather assessment said that not much cold was felt and the temperature was not that low compared to the previous years.
As per the official data, on December 19 in 2015, the maximum temperature was 12.5°C and the minimum was 3°C. In comparison, in 2014, the maximum temperature for December 17 was 15.3°C and minimum 9°C and on December 27, the maximum was 16.3°C and minimum 5.3°C. In 2013 on December 19, while the maximum temperature was 11.5°C, the minimum was 6.6°C on the same day. On December 30 the same year, the minimum temperature was 4.3°C and the maximum was 15.5°C.
The weather forecast for the next 24 hours is that partly cloudy weather is likely to occur with a likely minimum temperature of 8°C.
Environmentalists have cited loss of forest cover and increasing number of concrete structures in and around the city as the reason for the change in temperature.
