SHILLONG: The HSPDP on Wednesday suspended Sohryngkham MDC Pyniaid Sing Syiem for two years for his alleged anti-party activities.
Addressing a press conference on Wednesday, HSPDP general secretary Witting Mawsor said, “It has come to our notice that in the recent MDC elections he was not in line with the party. He had canvassed against the party.”
When asked to elaborate on Syiem’s anti-party activities, party member and MDC from Mylliem Teilinia Thangkhiew said, “In a recent interview by a TV channel, the president of HSPDP (Ardent Basaiawmoit) was asked whether he was aware that Syiem was campaigning for the KHNAM candidate from Laban-Mawprem constituency, Bankhraw Kharbuli.”
The party found out that Syiem was indeed campaigning for the KHNAM candidate and took the decision to suspend him for two years.
“We summoned him to the CEC meeting of the party but he did not clarify his stand.
“He instead said, ‘whatever the party decides, I will accept’,” Mawsor said.
Stressing that there is unity in the party under Basaiawmoit, Mawsor said, “Nobody will be allowed to tarnish the image of the party and anybody doing so should be disciplined.”
Replying to queries on L.G Nongsiej and Morning Mawsor’s role in the party, Nongstoin MLA Diosstarness Jyndiang said, “They are no longer part of the party.”
Last year, the two MDCs supported the People’s Democratic Forum (PDF) led by then Congress member KHADC CEM P.N Syiem, who is currently placed under suspension by the party. Their support irked the HSPDP leaders landing them in trouble.
‘HDR must go’
Condemning the rape of the 14-year-old girl, HSPDP demanded that Home Minister HDR Lyngdoh, whose family owns Marvelene’s Inn, should resign to facilitate fair investigation into the case.
“The party has urged the State Government to initiate an independent inquiry that will serve justice to the minor,” Mawsor said and added, “The Government has to be transparent in the investigation to prevent such incidences from happening in the future.”
When asked to comment on MLA Julius Dorphang’s role in the rape of the minor, Thangkhiew said, “The people of his constituency should teach him a lesson by not voting for him in the next election. As representatives we ought to be responsible.”
MLA Nongstoin Jyndiang said, “The question is, why did he make laws? And why did he break laws?”
