SHILLONG: Demanding action against those involved in the rape and trafficking of a 14-year-old girl in the city, UDP president Donkupar Roy said on Wednesday Chief Minister Mukul Sangma should either drop Home Minister HDR Lyngdoh from the ministry or take away his home portfolio.
Lyngdoh’s family runs the Marvelene’s Inn at Rilbong where the case first surfaced.
When contacted, Roy said for a fair probe, there is a need on the part of the Home Minister to relinquish his post. He also said the police should try all means to get the accused, Julius Dorphang.
According to Roy, the UDP cannot rush to condemn the MLA since charges against him are yet to be proved. “My advice to Julius is that if he is innocent, he should surrender to the police,” he added.
Meanwhile, UDP working president Paul Lyngdoh said, “Nobody should be spared,” when asked on the recent incident involving the rape of a minor allegedly by MLA Julius Dorphang at an inn owned by the family of the Home Minister.
He added that the law of the land is equal for all and that nobody is too high or too low in the eyes of the law.
When asked to comment on the alleged involvement of legislators in sexual assault and trafficking crime, Lyngdoh said, “We have additional responsibility as lawmakers. Our role is also to defend and uphold the law to ensure that law is maintained, respected and followed.”
