SHILLONG: The implementation of the two phases of the Meghalaya Health Insurance Scheme (MHIS) was not satisfactory and many citizens could not avail themselves of the benefits, the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of the Legislative Assembly said on Wednesday and assured that the third phase of the State Government scheme will start in March.
PAC chairman Paul Lyngdoh said, “The coverage of MHIS-I was 46 per cent and that of Phase II was 50 per cent, which means it was not satisfactory. Most citizens have not benefitted from the scheme.”
“There is a need to start the third phase as the second phase ended in October. The Health Department has assured us that the tendering process is underway and the financial bid will be on January 13 and technical bid on January 11. In the first week of March, the third phase of MHIS will be implemented,” he added.
The committee chairman pointed out that many people could not get benefits under the health cover scheme because insurance companies rejected them saying their claims were not genuine. He added that there was a need for tighter control over the insurance companies.
