SHILLONG: The meeting of the Congress party presidents of the Northeast region held in Guwahati on Thursday initiated the steps for mobilising the northeastern states to fight the “pain” inflicted by demonetisation and other “anti-poor policies” of the BJP-led government.
The meeting was chaired by C.P Joshi, AICC General Secretary in charge North East.
During the meeting, Joshi said that demonetisation is the biggest issue the country is facing currently.
“The Centre had said demonetisation would help track black money. But after inflicting so much pain on people, the narrative has changed to cashless economy. We want these points to be highlighted to the people of the northeastern region,” Joshi said.
Bhupen Kumar Borah, AICC secretary attached to Joshi, after the meeting told that the party chiefs should select at least 30 party members in each parliamentary constituency to visit 1,000 “non-Congress households” and brief them about the impact of demonetisation.
The PCC leaders were unanimous on strengthening the North East Congress Coordination Committee to take on challenges posed by the rivals of the Congress.
Borah said the RSS, and not the North East Democratic Alliance (NEDA), was a challenge as it was allegedly trying to destroy the culture and tradition of the North East.
The president of Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee, D.D Lapang, also attended the meeting.
Senior party leader, Lapang said that all the PCC chiefs in the North East should take responsibility for conducting programmes to fight the pain of the people in the region in particular and the country as a whole.
