SHILLONG: Chief Minister Mukul Sangma is examining the issue of whether the Home portfolio should be taken away from Cabinet Minister HDR Lyngdoh or he should be allowed to continue in the wake of the rape of the minor girl from Ichamati at Marvelene’s Inn at Rilbong run by the family of Lyngdoh.
Opposition Leader Donkupar Roy said on Sunday he had already spoken to the Chief Minister who informed him that the matter will be examined.
“There is a growing demand for the resignation of the Home Minister. The Chief Minister should relieve him of the Home portfolio. I have spoken to the Chief Minister and the assurance was that he will examine the matter,” Roy said.
According to Roy, there is no harm in relieving HDR of Home portfolio as he can still remain in the Cabinet and this will only result in people reposing more faith and trust in the government.
The UDP leader said the feeling of the people of the State is that HDR Lyngdoh should relinquish his Home portfolio. “We will wait and see. The government should act before public pressure mounts,” Roy said.
Asked about the justification of Lyngdoh that he was not directly involved in the matter, Roy said, “It is his views only. He has to consider the views of others too.”
