SHILLONG: Julius Dorphang’s life has turned full circle. From a gun-toting HNLC cadre to walking the corridors of power to the single cell at Sadar police station, the Mawhati legislator, who is one of the main accused in the rape of a 14-year-old girl, has been on a roller coaster ride.
Now, away from the lavish and colourful life of a politician, the MLA will spend his days locked within the four walls of the police cell with a common toilet and without any special treatment.
The absconding MLA was arrested from Guwahati on Friday night and is in five-day police custody till January 11. On January 4, the court issued a non-bailable arrest warrant against him. The MLA, like other accused, is given lunch and dinner with a simple menu of rice, dal and vegetable. He has a blanket to himself and is sleeping on the floor.
Police said so far Dorphang did not have many visitors except his sister who met him at the police station on Saturday.
The police have also turned down his family’s request to send home-cooked food due to security reasons.
Dorphang has been booked for rape under Section 366 (A) of the IPC read with Section 3 (a)/4 of the POCSO Act and under Section 5 of the Immoral Trafficking Prevention Act.
