Petition to CS demands revoking of order
SHILLONG: People of West Jaintia Hills and several NGOs in the district are dismayed over the sudden transfer of Deputy Commissioner Arun Kembhavi.
Kembhavi, who is affectionately referred to as the people’s deputy commissioner in the district, was transferred on January 2 as the DC of West Khasi Hills.
He served in the district for 551 days and as he informed people about his transfer on the official page of Jowai Deputy Commissioner on Facebook, people started expressing their disappointment over his transfer.
People know him as the most active DC on social media as is evident from his Facebook, which was last updated on January 4.
In his last message as the DC of West Jaintia Hills, Kembhavi wrote on his Facebook, “I may have committed few mistakes here and there. I can recall lathicharge against KNGCSU off the top of my head. Some people thought that the District Administration didn’t handle the issue properly. In hindsight all I can say is that I could have acted wiser. But as the head of the District Administration, my first and foremost job is to maintain law and order. Because when law and order is lost, everything is lost.”
Earlier, CCIB had demanded his resignation accusing him of being anti-people over the contentious border fencing.
Some people on Facebook reacted to the transfer as a great loss to West Jaintia Hills while others said he was the best DC under whom development took a new leap in the district.
Another organisation, the Jowai People Welfare Organisation, has petitioned the Chief Secretary demanding that Kembhavi’s transfer order be revoked as he implemented several central schemes in the district and his transfer would hamper development work.
Senior IAS officer R. Rapthap has taken over charge as Deputy Commissioner of West Jaintia Hills.
