TURA: An elephant broke away from its herd and went on the rampage in a village in Bajengdoba on Tuesday night damaging at least four houses.
Locals informed that a herd of over two dozen wild elephants have been moving in the area for the past two weeks in search of food and one of the herd members broke away on Tuesday evening and entered Bekbekgre village breaking through huts and mud walls.
Bajengdoba police had to be called in to chase away the jumbo after villagers failed to drive the animal away using fire crackers.
With increase in human habitation and dwindling habitation, wild elephants from Garo Hills frequently stray into the plains of neighbouring Assam and Bangladesh in search of food during winter. This often leads to damage of properties and crops in the villages falling on the elephant corridor.
