SHILLONG: The Khasi Students Union (KSU) on Friday expressed concern over the State Government’s snail pace in fulfilling its promises.
The Union’s general council meeting discussed an array of issues, including entry/exit points, uranium mining and railways.
The KSU has demanded that Phase I of setting up of entry and exit points will have to be completed by this year. This would also include land acquisition.
“The State Government has to constitute task forces in all the districts as per the Meghalaya Resident Safety and Security Act, 2016, passed by the Assembly last year so as to implement the Act,” said KSU president Daniel Khyriem.
Reiterating KSU’s opposition to uranium mining, Khyriem said, “The organisation will oppose the two-lane road project and exploratory mining.”
The organisation also reminded the state government to restore the PHC at Wahkaji.
Pointing to the role of the KHADC, Khyriem said, “The KHADC should disburse Rs 20 crore in South West Khasi Hills and restore the dilapidated road at Phlangdiloin.”
KSU reiterated its opposition to the railway projects in the State till the Government comes up with a comprehensive mechanism to prevent illegal immigration.
The KSU members also condemned the recent surge in cases of rape and the trafficking of the minor girl in the city.
Khyriem said there will be an election to the central executive committee for 2017-2022 on February 11 at Dinam Hall in Jaiaw. He will be the chairman of the election committee and Samuel Jyrwa the secretary.
Replying to a query on Aadhar implementation, Khyriem said, “The State Government should create awareness on its impact and then we will see.”
When asked to comment on the contentious ILP issue, the KSU president said the organisation’s stand has been the same.
