SHILLONG: The 102-km Jowai-Malidor double lane road project is progressing despite constraints and 40 per cent of the work is already complete.
Sources said GR Infrastructure, which is implementing the project, requires land from the district administration to complete the project at the earliest.
The project is facing several constraints like weather conditions and local issues.
The working season in Jaintia Hills is only four to five months as it rains for most part of the year.
However, the sources said the Rs 468-crore project, which started last year, will be completed in one and half years from now provided land is available with the implementing agency.     Also, there are several issues which are hindering the construction of drains for the road project.
The proposed upgradation of NH-44 from Jowai in West Jaintia Hills to Malidor on the Meghalaya-Assam border, which was scheduled to start in 2014, was delayed due to various reasons.
The expansion work of the arterial NH-44 has been approved under Phase III of the National Highway Development Programme.
Once the road is complete, the journey from Shillong to Silchar and Agartala will be hassle-free.
