TURA: South Garo Hills police chief Anand Mishra courted controversy on Thursday when he allegedly tore off his junior officer’s badge and flung it on to the ground while reprimanding him for failing to curb crimes in the Gasuapara region.
During the SP’s visit to Gasuapara police station on Thursday, the officer in charge of Gasuapara outpost, identified as Singh, was reportedly pulled up for failing to contain the rise in the number of abductions in the area.
Mishra allegedly tore the police stars off the sub-inspector’s uniform in front of civilians and some coal exporters. However, the police chief had a different story to tell. He acknowledged that he had indeed removed the police badge but at the same time claimed it was during a meeting and away from the public view.
“I had to pull him up because despite being detailed for duty he did not provide escort to the traders during the weekly market at Jadugre last week as a result of which three traders were kidnapped. He did not even follow up the case after their release,” said Mishra.
According to the police chief, those deployed at Gasuapara were violating the principles of the police force by wearing non-police uniforms and sporting long hair and beards. “I had to call a barber to ensure that they had their haircuts and beards removed as per police rules,” said Mishra.
