SHILLONG: The government-owned modernised plant of Mawmluh Cherra Cements Limited (MCCL) has started commercial production.
MCCL managing director Sanjay Goyal said the management is hoping that the new plant would turn around MCCL, which was bleeding for a long time.
The plant, which has got all necessary clearances for commercial operation, is producing around 8,000-9,000 metric tonne (MT) of cement at present and it will take some more time to reach its full capacity. The full capacity of the plant is 18,000 MT.
The modernisation of MCCL was the need of the hour considering the fact that the condition of the plant and machinery had deteriorated due to wear and tear leading to a decline in production.
The Rs 100-crore modernised plant will also consume less electricity.
Set up in the early 1960s, MCCL is the oldest public sector undertaking in Meghalaya and is also the only state-owned cement plant. The cement produced from the old plant had a large market here.
