UDP leader slams CM’s low conviction rate comment

SHILLONG: Amused at Chief Minister Mukul Sangma passing the buck to the judiciary for slow and low conviction rate in the State of crimes, former deputy chief minister Bindo Lanong, who also held the law portfolio, offered ‘free assistance’ to Sangma on the matter.
“How can the Chief Minister pass the buck to the judiciary? He should have asked his advocate general, public prosecutor or government counsels to provide the reasons for low and slow conviction,” Lanong said while interacting with media persons here on Thursday.
“If the chief minister asks me, I am willing to give free advice on the matter,” Lanong added.
It may be mentioned that while replying to a query, the Chief Minister had on Wednesday asked media persons to approach the judiciary to ascertain the reason for low conviction rate of criminals, especially in the context of atrocities against women and children.
Lanong, who is also a lawyer, lamented that the people would have nowhere to seek justice from if the Chief Minister of the State shrugs off responsibility.
