Group threatens to shut down all fair price shops

SHILLONG: Taking note of the non-inclusion of tribal beneficiaries in the National Food Security Act (NFSA) list, the Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) on Monday gave a month’s deadline to the district authorities to include deserving beneficiaries in the list.
The HYC Nongthymmai circle met Deputy Commissioner P.S Dkhar on Monday with a demand to rectify the list as Council general secretary Enlang Sawian alleged that 90 per cent of the beneficiaries on the NFSA list are non-tribals.
Speaking to reporters, Sawian said, “The irregularity was found mainly in the areas falling under Madanrting where indigenous people are not able to avail themselves of ration cards under NFSA.”
The organisation has threatened to shut down all fair price shops operating under Madanrting if the list is not rectified within a month.
Sawian said, “The DC has assured us that he will take all possible steps but he has pointed to the failure of the socio-economic census for non-inclusion of tribal people in the list.”
HYC president T Kharjahrin said, “The district administration should conduct a review of the list and ensure that the names of non-tribals without proper documents are accordingly deleted.”
He alleged that politicians may manipulate people for vote bank.
