Two fishermen feared drowned in Brahmaputra
Rangiya(Assam): Two fishermen were feared drowned when their boat capsized in river Brahmaputra near Sualkuchi, police said on Saturday. The two, Himangshu Kalita (22) and Dhameswar Kalita (32) had gone fishing when a stormed occurred during which their boat capsized on Saturday. River police have launched a search for them, the sources added. (PTI)
Two held with pangolin skin worth Rs.9 mn
Silchar: Two people were arrested here with 144 kg of pangolin skin worth Rs.87 lakh that was being smuggled to China via Myanmar, custom officials said Saturday.
“Five bags of the skin were recovered Friday night from a Guwahati-Aizawl passenger bus,” customs superintendent Sudip Kumar Datta told reporters here.
The customs officials found the contraband from the bus bound for Mizoram capital Aizawl at Sonabari Ghat in southern Assam, 400 km south of Assam’s main city of Guwahati. The detainees — Lalengliana, 44 and Malneichauna, 41 — said they were residents of Mizoram, Datta said. (IANS)
Bio-Diversity Conservation Conclave opens
Kohima: With an aim to conserve ecological system, the Asahuto bio-diversity Conservation Enclave, covering an area of about 30 hectares located at Luvishe Old Village in Zunheboto district, was inaugurated recently.
Official sources here on Saturday said the Bio-diversity Conservation Enclave is home to many rare, endangered animals, along with rare Medicinal and aromatic plants are also found in the forest area such as Paris polyphylla, Valeriana wallichii, Hypericum perforatum, Mahonia nepalensis, Swertia chirata, Swertia bimaculata and Anaphalis margaritacea. Natl Painting Workshop ends
Kohima: The week-long National Painting Workshop, organised by the Lalit Kala Akademi (LKA) Regional Centre, Shillong, in collaboration with the Department of Art and Culture, Nagaland, concluded here on Friday evvening.
Altogether 22 artists from Madhya Pradesh, Odissa, Tripura, Bihar, Gujarat, Assam and Manipur and five from host state of Nagaland took part and exchanged their views and opinions during the week-long Painting Workshop, where local talents got knowledge over various forms of paintings.
Addressing a press conference at the conclusion ceremony of the Workshop, LKA Regional Centre advisor Dr U S Tiwari said the Nagaland, with a panoramic landscape, scenic ranges of mountains and bountiful beauties of nature, with a good numbers of talent artists and craftsmen, has tremendous scope to develop Arts and Paintings.
He emphasised on the urgent need of a Art College and one Art Gallery in the state to guide the upcoming talents and requested the Nagaland Arts and Culture Department to look into the matter with serious note. (UNI)
