MANIPUR: The North East Students’ Organisation (NESO) representing eight major students’ groups of the North East held an emergency meeting on Tuesday in Guwahati to discuss the deteriorating situation in Manipur vis-à-vis the creation of seven new districts resulting in the imposition of economic blockade since last November.
The organisation demanded the Centre’s intervention in ending the impasse by bringing all stakeholders on the negotiation table.
NESO chairman Samuel Jyrwa said the body will meet Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh and MoS for Home Kiren Rijiju in this regard.
NESO — which comprises the Khasi Students’ Union , All Assam Students’ Union , Naga Students’ Federation, Mizo Zirlai Pawl , Twipra Students’ Federation , All Manipur Students’ Union, Garo Students’ Union  and All Arunachal Pradesh Students’ Union — said it was “seriously concerned” about the people of Manipur who are at the receiving end of the blockade.
The meeting also reiterated its opposition to the proposed Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016, which aims to recognise all Hindu Bangladeshis as Indian citizens.
