NONGSTOIN: The KSU in West Khasi Hills has demanded that the State Government cancel its permission to the Border Security Force to set up camp at Umjaram in Nongstoin.
John Fisher, president of KSU Nongsiang unit, told The Shillong Times that Home Minister HDR Lyngdoh inspected the site of the proposed BSF camp on January 26 making it clear that the Government has given the BSF go-ahead for the base in the district. “Locals will not benefit from this. Instead, there will be a feeling of insecurity,” he said.
The KSU said instead of posting the security force to the border areas, the government is giving permission for a camp in the heart of Nongstoin, which is hundreds of kilometres away from the international border.  The move, the union said, would be a cause for worry, “especially for young girls and women”. “The camp will lead to influx of non-tribals in the area”.
