Community policing to be launched soon

SHILLONG: The community policing initiative mulled by the State Police to check crimes in the State will be launched in the next 30 to 45 days.

As per the initiative, the police department will form a citizens’ committee both at the State and police station levels for better policing and to improve the overall security scenario in the State.

State DGP N Ramachandran has said that under the new initiative, the Officers In-charge of every police station will constitute a committee and after the approval of the SP the committee will meet at least once every month to discuss various issues of the particular area.

“We may even involve the traditional institutions in the committee,” Ramachandran said, while stating that initially the committee will comprise of respectable people of the area.

Reacting to a query on whether members of the committee would also help in police operations, the police chief said, “We will not force people to participate in operations but we can get advice from them on certain issues.”

The committee will also deliberate on various day to day aspects of life such as traffic and crime prevention and give its recommendations to the police for necessary action.
