Police to step up anti-GNLA operations

 SHILLONG: The State police are all set to intensify operations against the militants of Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) that is on a rampage in Garo hills areas of the State.

The Director General (DG) of State Police, N Ramachandran said the State policemen had been asked to be extra careful and vigilant so that they were not lured into traps by militants.

The DGP was referring to the recent episode of GNLA attack on policemen in which three policemen in Gambegre development block, 20 kms from Tura, had been abducted by ultras, who later killed one of them.

He said the entire episode was meticulously planned and executed after months of preparations.

The policemen who were part of an armed section manning a bank at Gambegre development block were lured into a trap by GNLA militants.

As many as 15 well-armed GNLA militants, allegedly led by ‘southern commander’ Baichung Momin accosted the three policemen during their fishing trip that had been arranged by a villager from Jongbugre village, 3 kms from Gambegre. The villager also played a major role in the militants’ plan.

Soon after the incident, police stepped up operations against the outfit and a senior GNLA deputy area commander Dilseng alias Bashish was shot dead by the force.

According to Ramachandran, the State police is also taking a series of security measures to foil any attack of the militants in any part of the State.
