City rock climbers complete Assistant Belayer training

Shillong: Two members of the Meghalaya Sport Climbing and Mountaineering Association (MeSCMA) Pilaster Nongsiej, a resident of Mawlangwir and Hokson Lyngdoh a resident of Upper Lumparing, successfully acquired theoretical and practical knowledge as Assistant Belayer for Sports Climbing.  They were sent by the North East Zone Sports Climbing Committee to undergo training for Belayer Course 2017 at the Indian Mountaineering Foundation at New Delhi.  The course was designed to introduce participants to belaying skills and covered the skills necessary to belayer using a lead climbing system and top rope system in artificial wall climbing. The course also covered safety practices, basic climbing knots, belay techniques, climber’s movement, equipment and terminology, how to recover long and uncertain fall during climbing, spotting and the belayer’s role during competition.
