SHILLONG: Cabinet minister Prestone Tynsong has predicted that the Congress will emerge as the single largest party in the State in the 2018 polls. Tynsong, however, refused to comment whether he will be in the race to become the next chief minister in case the Congress emerges victorious.
Former Deputy Chief Minister Rowell Lyngdoh recently said the prevailing situation will affect the performance of the Congress in Meghalaya. Currently, the Congress has 30 members in the House of 60. However, Tynsong said, “We (Congress) will emerge as the single largest party.”
Tynsong added that in Meghalaya, politics is different from that in other parts of the country.
He pointed out that even in the past when the Congress was not in power at the Centre, it formed the government in Meghalaya.
Earlier, Lyngdoh had said the change in the central political scenario will also affect the prospects of the party in the State.
He was also critical about Chief Minister Mukul Sangma and MPCC president DD Lapang.
However, Tynsong said revamping of the party is an ongoing exercise.
Asked about Lyngdoh naming Tynsong, among others, as potential leaders after the 2018 polls, he said, “We will cross the bridge when we come to it.”
In contrary, earlier at a function, Congress leader and Cabinet minister HDR Lyngdoh had said Sangma should continue as the chief minister even after 2018 polls.
