SHILLONG: Chief Minister Mukul Sangma said transport facilities will improve in Meghalaya as national highways will soon connect the State to the rest of the country.
Speaking at the inaugural function of the Mawngap police station, Sangma said, “This NH-44 extension connects with the 127B and we have the longest bridge in the country on the Brahmaputra, which is 17 km as per the survey.”
However, the chief minister did not give any leverage to the present NDA government and instead, attributed the highway projects to the UPA government.
“A delegation from the State Government met the then Minister of Road Transport and Highways, CP Joshi, during the UPA regime,” Sangma said and added that the NH-44 extension is only up to Nongstoin but through persistent requests from the State Government, the central government obliged by sanctioning the road project.
With better means of transport facilities goods from Meghalaya will have complete stabilisation of price, Sangma said and assured that the prices which people are getting for their goods will rise.
“Farmers will get more money. The price which we are paying for goods will also come down,” he added.
While on the trip to Mawngap, it was observed that the construction work along NH-44 is ongoing. This will connect with 127B. The road will connect North Bengal-Dhubri-Brahmaputra and NH44 via Williamnagar to Nongstoin.
