TURA: A coal truck fell into a gorge in South Garo Hills killing one woman and injuring 35 others, including children, a delayed report said.
The occupants of the truck were returning from a weekly market at Chokpot, which is about 50km from district headquarters Baghmara.
The accident took place near Raja Ronggat village, 10km from Chokpot, when the driver lost control. It happened on Monday afternoon, a day after a similar incident killed 17 persons in West Khasi Hills.
Twenty-five-year old Denira G Momin, who was going to visit her husband at Raja Ronggat, died in Monday’s accident. Among the injured were six children, two of whom suffered broken legs.
Ten critically injured passengers, including five women, have been shifted to Tura Civil Hospital and the others have been taken to Chokpot Health Centre.
In the West Khasi Hills tragedy, a speeding truck carrying churchgoers rammed into a concrete barrier after the driver lost control killing 17 of the 78 occupants.
In many remote parts of Garo Hills, public transport is rare and people often avail themselves of coal trucks for travelling.
