SHILLONG: Three government lawyers have resigned allegedly in protest against the appointment of a lawyer from Assam for the post of senior government advocate.
Those who resigned are senior government advocate N.D Shullai, government advocate N.G Shylla and panel advocate B. Khyriem. Though Shullai had cited personal reasons for his decision,  a section of the legal fraternity is unhappy over the sudden appointment of Geeta Deka from Assam as senior government advocate in place of Shullai.
Others who were appointed include P. Sabatini Nongbri as government advocate and Pooja Agarwal as panel advocate.
The notification says the new appointees will assist the Advocate General and Additional Advocate General.
There were allegations that it was Advocate General B.P Todi who preferred Deka from Assam to be appointed as the senior government advocate.
When contacted, Todi denied the allegations and said she was appointed because she was eligible for the post.
However, sources said there are enough qualified advocates in the State who could have been appointed for the post.
Moreover, sources added that Nongbri and Agarwal do not have adequate years of experience to be eligible for the posts of government advocate and panel advocate, respectively.
