SHILLONG: The Civil Society Women’s Organisation (CSWO) has opposed the appointment of former DGP Rajiv Mehta as the security advisor to the State Government.
In a statement issued to the media, CSWO president Agnes Kharshiing said it was an illegal move “as public fund will be wasted in accommodating few corrupt officials who never performed”.
“What security advice can the former DGP provide to the State when he could not even determine the murder of his own honest official (Late) P.J Marbaniang and accepted the findings as suicide,” Kharshiing said.
Marbaniang’s body was found at his official quarter at Patharkhmah in January 2015. There were bullet injuries on his head.
CSWO’s Kharshiing said Mehta did not have the courtesy to reply to the request of Marbaniang’s mother who wanted a copy of the inquiry report on the death of her son and till date, this report has not been provided to her.
“There are a few serving senior officials in the Meghalaya police department who are capable of giving sound security advice and not like some others whose advice is only to benefit a few and create tension and fear among all,” the CSWO statement said.
The organisation also asked the Government not to dilly-dally in appointing a full-fledged DGP and warned of legal action in case the State fails to do so.
“The Chief Secretary knows that these tactics of appointing retired people are played by some in the Government and the appointments are not based on any rule. The Chief Secretary, who is the Government custodian, should strongly take note of this and many other irregularities being carried out at the whims and fancies of some public servants and corrupt IAS bureaucrats,” Kharshiing said.
CSWO feels appointment of retired officials will prevent promotion of many officers and curtail job opportunities for youths, besides violating their constitutional rights. “The finance department should not allow payment to retired persons who are appointed from the State exchequer as this is not mandated in law,” Kharshiing said.
