SHILLONG: The adjournment motion brought by HSPDP member Ardent Basaiawmoit to discuss crime against women and children was disallowed by Speaker A.T Mondal on Monday.
Mondal said a special motion tabled by UDP member Paul Lyngdoh was already admitted and another amendment motion was moved by UDP’s Donkupar Roy and NPP’s James Sangma on the same issue.
After the question hour, Mondal referred to the adjournment motion submitted at 8.50 am on Monday by the HSPDP legislator who wanted a discussion on the spurt in crime against women and children which, according to him, is a matter of public importance.
The legislator also wanted to highlight the failure of the state government to provide safety and security to women and children.
Basaiawmoit said the spurt in such crimes has tarnished the image of the state and even Raj Bhavan was no exception as it was reportedly termed as a young ladies’ club.
According to the HSPDP leader, the matter cannot be swept under the carpet and the House should stand united on the issue.
Paul Lyngdoh said since the special motion tabled by him was admitted, there would be scope for debate on this.
Later, Opposition Leader Roy and Jemino Mawthoh (UDP) raised the issue while taking up the amendment to the motion of thanks to the Governor’s address.
