SHILLONG: The United Democratic Party (UDP) has criticised the State government for not dropping Home Minister HDR Lyngdoh from his post despite demand for his resignation over a 14-year-old girl’s rape and trafficking.
UDP vice president Allantry F. Dkhar said the party’s leaders – Donkupar Roy, Paul Lyngdoh, Jemino Mawthoh – and other MLAs like Ardent Basaiawmoit, James K. Sangma have made “commendable efforts” in sounding out the reality of the situation during the ongoing Assembly session.
“Paul Lyngdoh has even brought a special motion on the issue. However, our chief minister for reasons best known to him has failed to act despite Donkupar Roy’s advice of either dropping the home minister or removing him from the Home portfolio, which are very sound and rational demands,” he said.
Dkhar also said it was not surprising to see the Home minister shirking off his primary responsibility.
“One wonders what step the government is contemplating to instill confidence in women and children of our state when even the Home minister is insensitive to the     ongoing crime against humanity,” he added.
Letter to Parrikar: Meanwhile, UDP’s memorandum to Union Minister Manohar Parrikar said defence authorities can be fully accommodated at Rangman near the airport in Ri Bhoi district since the government had made available 1400 acres of land to the Army. The letter also said Shillong being the capital will further expand with increase in population and various infrastructures like playground, widened roads and overbridges would be the requirement of the city.
