SHILLONG: The State Government constructed only three lower primary school buildings after as many as 2,568 schools were taken over by the Government in 1984 from autonomous district councils.
This was informed by School Education and Literacy Minister Deborah Marak in the Assembly on Thursday in reply to a question by HSPDP’s K.P Pangniang, who brought to the notice of the Minister the appalling condition of several school buildings.
“Many school buildings are in bad shape,” the legislator said and asked the government whether it has fund to repair/re-construct the buildings. He cited that there are five to six school buildings in his constituency which need repair.
Pangniang argued that since it is a government property, the Government should take care of it.
However, the minister asked the MLA to spend money from his scheme to repair the schools as the process on the part of the Government takes a long time.
Chief Minister Mukul Sangma said that during the budget speech delivered on Wednesday, several initiatives of the Government regarding school buildings were mentioned.
