Construction of slab over stream in Dhanketi

SHILLONG: PWD (Buildings) Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh has clarified that the construction of a slab over the stream near Woodland Hospital at Dhanketi was being carried out to protect the water body.
The move to construct the slab over the stream had stirred a controversy after it was initially rumored that a parking lot is being constructed in the area at the cost of the stream.
As soon as the matter was brought to the notice of the Government, the Shillong Municipal Board sent a notice to the PWD (Buildings). The department then clarified that there was no plan to construct any such structure and it was made abundantly clear that the project involved constructing a slab cover over the stream which would further expand its width.
Lyngdoh said that there is no controversy over the project and the department is trying to replicate the success story of Jacob Ladders road where slabs were constructed to save the stream from pollution besides providing a better passage for vehicles.
She said that department will ensure that the stream, which has become a dumping ground of sorts, “is not harmed during the project”.
