TURA: A large number of shopkeepers in Tura town who have been refusing to accept the Rs 10 coins issued by the Reserve Bank of India could face legal action if a complaint is made by consumers.
The Reserve Bank of India on Tuesday said that the Rs 10 coin was very much in circulation and those refusing to accept it could face legal action, setting to rest rumours that the coin was banned.
There are widespread complaints from consumers in Tura and other towns of Garo Hills that shopkeepers and operators of public transport are returning the coins and demanding currency note after a fake WhatsApp message claimed the coins to be invalied.“nothing of that kind has happened. We have not even thought of it. People should not hesitate in using the coins for transactions as these coins are legal tender,” stated the RBI.
In Tura one particular consumer had a harrowing time in getting change in the market with one shop after another refusing to accept his coins. He was unaware about the situation and had only just been paid a handful of the coins.
The RBI had issued a new R 10 coin, in June this year, six years after it was introduced.
