SHILLONG: The State government has not yet finalised the name of an agency for Aadhaar enrolment despite the Centre linking major welfare schemes to the unique identity number.
Only 23 per cent of the State’s population has been enrolled so far.
East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner P.S Dkhar said as most of the people in the State do not possess Aadhaar cards, their problems have doubled in the last few years following the Centre’s directives.
People who are living outside the State for job or studies and pensioners need Aadhaar number for various services.
He said the government is in the process of selecting a new agency and “as soon as the new vendor is appointed, the administration will   again start the enrolment of the citizens for obtaining of the Aadhaar number”.
Dkhar said the district administration will consult the Dorbar Shnong and village Dorbar for enrolment to avoid misgivings.
On the opposition of various pressure groups, especially the Khasi Students’ Union against implementation of Aadhaar, Dkhar said the main concern of the KSU is that the government should ensure that only the genuine people are enrolled. This would be addressed by the government.
