Plea for state holiday in honour of Phan Nonglait

SHILLONG: The Ka Phan Nonglait Committee has urged the State Government to announce a State Holiday in honour of Ka Phan Nonglait and to recognise her as a freedom fighter for the country that retaliated against the British Raj.
It was on Saturday, the clan members convened a meeting to release her portrait of Ka Phan Nonglait at Mawlai Nonglum.
When contacted, Danielstone Lyngdoh Nonglait, acting chairman of the committee said, “Her descendants wants the State Government to announce a State Holiday and to recognise her as she was the only woman freedom fighter.”
Lyngdoh  Nonglait informed that he will soon release a book titled, Life and Work of Phan Nonglait struggle for freedom.
The descendants of Ka Phan Nonglait have preserved the residence of the freedom fighter, who along with U Tirot Sing Syiemlieh, fought against the British in Khasi Hills.
“Her residence falls under Hima Nongkhlaw, there is the Phan Nonglait falls- the place where she killed 32 men from the British army,” he said.
The chairman added, “The descendants are not allowing anyone to construct houses there, the garden and the entire place is being preserved.”
When asked whether there are any plans to convert her residence into heritage site, Nonglait said, “The Hima Nongkhlaw yearns to preserve the place as a memory in her honour.”
