JOWAI: Private vehicles used as tourist cabs and even ambulances run by pressure groups are plying illegally in East and West Jaintia Hills without proper permits and with fully tinted glasses in violation of the Mother Vehicle Act and the Supreme Court ruling banning dark glass in vehicles. A number of vehicles plying along the NH in Jowai, Ladrymbai and Khliehriat have been without number plates for months and some even sport tinted glasses. Hundreds of such vehicles are found in East Jaintia Hills. Interestingly, even an ambulance run by the Hynniewtrep National Peoples’ Federation/Front (HNPF) is plying without number plate and has tinted glass on it.
The district transport authorities and the district administrations of East and West Jaintia Hills have failed to check the menace thereby leading to a loss of revenue and putting the women of the districts at risk.
Crime against women is on the rise in Jaintia Hills and the vehicles with tinted glasses can be used perpetrators of such crimes.
