SHILLONG: The Chairperson of the State Commission for Protection of Child Rights, Meena Kharkongor, on Monday stressed on the need to set up medical teams in government hospitals to determine whether an accused is feigning illness.
Kharkongor spoke with the director of health services on phone on Monday before meeting the medical superintendent on the issue.
The need for special teams arises after several instances of accused persons suddenly falling ill and getting admitted in state hospitals in recent times.
The latest case is of Edmund Paul Kharir, the manager of Marvelene’s Inn, which is embroiled in a 14-year-old girl’s rape and trafficking case, who fell ill after his arrest last Thursday.
Once the medical teams are set up in all government hospitals, experts will examine and confirm whether the arrested persons are suffering from ill health or faking illness.
