SHILLONG: The State Government has floated fresh tender for engaging a new agency for Aadhaar enrollment.
P.W Ingty, State Nodal Officer-NPR, said on Monday the Government needs to approve the agency that will carry out the enrolment drive for the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI).
The State Government was forced to float a new tender following payment issues with the old agency.
Initially, Aadhaar enrolment met with opposition in the State but with the Centre linking it with most of the government schemes and official works, the resistance has subsided.
The Centre has, however, exempted Meghalaya, Assam and Jammu & Kashmir from mandatory Aadhaar as the enrolment coverage in these states is low.
According to Ingty, around 10 per cent population have been enrolled under UIDAI.
Meanwhile, sources said new machines for enrollment have arrived in the DC office in Shillong and now the biometric has to be linked with the data server in Bangalore. The enrolment process will be subject to rigorous checking and verification, in consultation with local institutions.
A person can use Aadhaar number for identity verification on multiple occasions like for opening a bank account, booking tickets online, applying for passport and at many other places where there is a need to give the proof of identity. Aadhaar will give migrants mobility of their identity.
