TURA: Angry residents of a Garo Hills village near the Assam border on Tuesday set on fire three motorcycles belonging to a gang of troublemakers from the neighbouring state. Six inebriated persons from Mankachar area of Assam came to Banshali village, not far from Garobadha town, in South West Garo Hills and began to break empty bottles on the village road, which was strongly objected by the locals. This led to an altercation and the hooligans left only to come back with a large group from Assam. They allegedly began to pelt stones injuring a villager.
The villagers then chased the troublemakers who fled towards Assam. In the melee they abandoned the motorcycles which were set on fire.
Police teams from Monabari outpost and Garobadha arrived at the scene to bring the situation under control.
The inter-state border between Garo Hills and Assam had witnessed unrest in the past too. Gangs of miscreants often spread terror in the border region. Last month, a gang of dacoits crossed over from Assam and attacked a trader’s family in Garobadha and looted all their valuables. The victims are being treated in a hospital in Guwahati.
