Shillong: The Meghalaya People’s Committee on Aadhaar has welcomed the Supreme Court’s interim order that has made Aadhaar voluntary and not mandatory and said the State is unnecessary putting pressure on the citizens to enroll for the unique number.
While the Committee appreciated the Centre for exempting Meghalaya, Assam and Jammu and Kashmir from mandatory submission of Aadhaar numbers, it criticised the State machinery for using “subtle ways” to coerce people to opt for Aadhaar.
The Committee has appealed to the citizens of the State not to get intimidated by any form of pressure from government officials, school authorities, banking staff or the administration.
It further said that those who have already enrolled have the option to opt out by requesting the nearest UIDAI centre.
