TURA: The northern unit of the Garo Students’ Union has called for blockade in North Garo Hills district beginning from February 22-24 in protest against the delay initiating work on the Mendipathar-Songsak road project that was approved in 2013. The group announced that the blockade will be from 7pm-5am.
“The GSU and inhabitants of North Garo Hills had submitted a memorandum to the deputy commissioner on January 30, 2017, complaining against the M/S CCL International Limited for delaying its construction of the Mendipathar to Songsak road.
As per documents the work had been allotted to the company by the State Government on December 11, 2013, from the office of Additional Chief Engineer PWD (roads) Tura and was to be completed within 24 months from the date of commissioning,” said GSU northern zone president Landslord Ch Momin.
The union had earlier issued a 15-day deadline to the district administration to take necessary steps to start work.
“But due to negligence of the administration and the PWD to fulfil our demand, the union is compelled to start three nights of road blockade in entire North Garo Hills from Wednesday. If the government continues to ignore the public demand we will start an indefinite blockade,” said GSU secretary Sinbath Sangma.
The union has questioned the delay saying the company was well-equipped and using the latest ‘German’ technology for road construction.
The union alleges that the road condition has deteriorated further and locals are suffering due to the dust.
