Kohima: Several organisations working to preserve nature and ecology in the state on Thursday appealed to the public not to trap or kill migratory birds like Amur Falcon.

The markets of Dimapur, Kohima and district headquarters like Wokha and Mokokchung were full of these birds being sold at Rs 100 to 150 per bird, alive or dead.

The nature-loavers of Mokokchung, under banners of various organisations, had already appealed to the public to preserve these rare birds which visit Nagaland during the autumn. The Green Foundation of Wokha had appealed to the people of Nagaland, especially the people of Wokha not to indulge in shooting, killing and entrapping of Amur falcons and sell within Wokha district of Nagaland.

The organisation in a press release here today stated that in spite of the blanket ban imposed by the district administration with regard to killing, shooting and entrapping of migratory birds and its sales, illegal sales of live and roasted birds were rampant within Wokha district, and requested the district administration to penalise the defaulters as per the law.
