TURA: Chief Minister Mukul Sangma on Saturday laid the foundation stone for the State’s 41st community and rural development (C&RD) block at Demdema in West Garo Hills’ Dadenggre sub-division.
Demdema, which is the second in the series of recently declared new blocks, will cover 147 villages which were earlier under Dadenggre and Selsella blocks.
The foundation stone for Bharat Nirman Rajiv Gandhi Seva Kendra was also laid on the occasion.
The building will be temporarily used as block office.
Asserting that the new blocks would bridge the gap in development, the Chief Minister said, “Most of the development schemes were implemented through C&RD blocks and expressed confidence that this initiative will enable the Government to take care of the disparities and development gaps in the region.
The Chief Minister was accompanied by Speaker A.T Mondal, Forest and Environment Minister Clement Marak and C&RD Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar.
He said the new block will be the epicenter of activities.
A national highway (NH-127B) is also being constructed to connect Srirampore in West Bengal with the rest of Meghalaya.
He also announced the government’s plan to set up an industrial park in the area and said this region would be the frontrunner in getting the benefits of all the developmental initiatives.
“There will be complete transformation in the socio-economic landscape of the region and of the whole State,” the chief minister said.
