SHILLONG: Assam transport department’s new guideline has affected tourist taxi and passenger bus operators in the city.
As per the new rule, the buses and taxis are not allowed to put luggage on the rooftop and a violation of this would invite a penalty of Rs 1,500-2,000.
Hundreds of tourist vehicles run between Shillong and Guwahati every day and the owners as well as drivers say this new rule has affected their business.
Some drivers say with the new order, they are now forced to put luggage inside the vehicles and hence they cannot take as many passengers as they used to do earlier.
Drivers also say Assam police are arbitrarily imposing a hefty fine of Rs 1,500-2,000 if they put luggage on the roof of the vehicle.
One of the drivers said it is nearly three weeks since the new rule has been implemented.
However, passengers will also feel the ripple effect of the new guideline as some drivers are contemplating an increase in fares.
The drivers, who complain that they “do not deserve the ill-treatment” as they pay all taxes to the Meghalaya Government, say they had approached the State Government on this but in vain. T. Dkhar, Commissioner and Secretary, Transport Department, said they will take up the matter with authorities concerned if the aggrieved parties approach the government and added that he had not received any complaints so far.
